Susan DeLand has been a business professional active in the non-profit cultural arena and the for-profit specialty retail sector for many years. She has been recruited repeatedly as an expert and visionary start-up team member. Susan worked with the building team for the Autry National Center, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Getty Villa. She planned and designed these new stores from ground breaking to operation. In addition, Susan has headed many remodels at a variety of institutions.

Susan began her retail career as a buyer and product developer and has moved through virtually every aspect of consumer business; from the financial to personnel training to the visual aesthetic. She has a broad background in business development and envisioning creative strategies tailored to the mission and needs of an organization. Susan has a proven ability to lead a team beyond the expected and nurture their creativity as well as their fiscal accountability. She knows that a solid financial structure is the framework on which to hang unfettered imagination.

Through this work Susan has developed friendships and alliances both domestically and internationally. The governments of Canada, Peru, Germany, and Italy have hosted her on trade missions to their countries, establishing an international network of business alliances. Susan’s experience encompasses stores, product design, wholesale business, online business, publishing, licensing, teaching seminars, and strategic planning. Her long-time work at the J. Paul Getty Museum utilized this expertise and the profits from the enterprise under her direction contributed to a quarter of the museum’s operating budget.

Whether designing a product or a business plan, Susan’s history with some of the most notable organizations in the country shape her professional profile.
